Path to palate perfection

Local winery Oakdene has been awarded most successful exhibitor at this year’s Bendigo Bank Geelong Wine Show alongside several other accolades.

The Deakin Geelong Waurn Ponds estate was awash with wine connoisseurs ready to sample the best of the regions producers across the October 17-18 weekend.

Oakdene received the show’s coveted Vinvicta Products trophy for the most successful exhibitor alongside three gold medals a silver and seven bronze.

The Seguin Moreau Trophy for best oak matured Chardonnay and the Black Salt Trophy for best Pinot Noir were awarded to Oakdene’s Liz’s Chardonnay and Peta’s Pinot Noir respectively.

Steven Paul from Oakdene Wines said it was a fantastic weekend and a brilliant outcome for the team who had not won a trophy for over a decade at this particular event.

“We’ve won awards at other shows but the last time we were awarded at the Geelong Wine Show was for our Liz’s Chardonnay back in 2006,” Steven said.

“To win the gold over 10 years later was fantastic. You walk in and you just never know, even though we were up for a few trophies you could win a few or none.”

He said the awards were reflective of their outstanding winemakers Robin Brockett and Marcus Holt and the team that is slowly growing.

“We recently planted a new vineyard taking us from 30 to 80 acres in total. We’ve been working together for a long time now and you always hope you’re doing the right thing.

“Winning these awards is rewarding and validates that judges have tasted our wines and said it’s very nice.

“We’re open and running for the Toast to the Coast and it’s great that the public will be able to sample these award-winning wines.”
