PLAY Looks At Hoarding

November 2, 2017 BY

A new La Mama production Birdcage Thursdays takes a theatrical and comical look at some of the issues surrounding hoarding.

As described by Health Victoria, hoarding is a recognised behavioural mental health condition where an inability to dispose of items often results in squalor living.

Birdcage Thursdays tells the story of an ageing woman struggling against her hoarding tendencies and her adult daughter dealing with the impacts the mental illness can have in a social housing environment.

Starring one of Australia’s most beloved actresses, Genevieve Picot, the show was inspired by experience within writer Sandra Fiona Long’s own family and developed with research from hoarding professionals.

Hoarding places immense pressure on families and puts sufferers and their families at risk of homelessness, ill health, family breakdown, isolation and even suicide.

Birdcage Thursdays is more than just about hoarding – it is a play about relationships, people and how we love, particularly when we’re broken by the world inside and out.

The show will be performed on October 12 at 8pm at the Potato Shed 20-41 Peninsula Drive Drysdale.

Tickets can be booked at the Potato Shed, via phone on 52 511 998 or for more information head to geelongaustralia.com.au/potatoshed.
