Thousands commit to this year’s Walking Stars

November 7, 2019 BY

Cancer Council hopes to recruit 3,000 participants to take part in Walking Stars 2019, with the aim of raising $300,000 for the fight against cancer.

More than 2,000 people have signed on for Cancer Council Victoria’s Walking Stars half marathon in a bid to light up the city for cancer research.

The course – which will take its participants on a 21km trek through Melbourne’s CBD – will start at Alexandra Gardens on December 7 and see its movers pass by some of the city’s most popular landmarks.

Cancer Council Victoria’s head of community engagement Lyrian Fleming-Parsley said the event served as an opportunity for everyone to experience Melbourne from a different perspective while raising funds to support Victorians affected by cancer.

She also stressed people should not feel discouraged by the course’s distance and instead take part at their own pace.

“We encourage everyone to join in the incredible atmosphere by wearing bright colours, glow in the dark items, face paint and, of course, comfy shoes.

“We work with Victorians to reduce their cancer risk by providing education on healthy lifestyle choices to help people understand risks of tobacco, alcohol, obesity and UV exposure.”

According to Cancer Council Victoria, more than 34,500 Victorians are diagnosed with cancer every year.

All funds raised in the lead up to Walking Stars and post-event will go towards life-saving cancer research, prevention programs and support services.

Registration includes access to training and fundraising ideas, tips and advice, hydration and refreshments on the night and a walker number and back sign.

Participants who complete the walk will also receive a medal. To register, head to walkingstars.org.au.
