3-metre deep sinkhole interrupts City traffic

A SUSPECTED pipe failure has caused a sinkhole to appear on Myers Street with State Emergency Services first on the scene.

The three-metre-deep hole was reported this morning with Geelong police attending the scene at about 10.30am.

Police quickly gained control of the situation, which was obstructing traffic along the busy city road.

It is believed a vehicle had driven over the sinkhole before it was reported to police.

The Geelong SES Unit were called to the scene before the matter was referred to Barwon Water.

An SES spokesperson said appropriate measures had been made before their arrival.

“When we arrived Victoria Police had it under control, they had already contacted council and Barwon Water so they made the decision to stand us down.”

Barwon Water acting managing director Shaun Cumming said they believe the issue has been detected.

“We are responding to a suspected sewer pipe issue that has caused minor damage to the road on Myers Street, adjacent to the Haymarket Carpark,” he said.

Mr Cumming said traffic will continue to be diverted via the parking lane until the sinkhole could be further investigated by Barwon Water.

There is believed to be no disruption to the sewerage services provided to customers.

“We apologise for the inconvenience and will provide further updates via social media,” Mr Cumming said.

The cause of the sinkhole has yet to be confirmed as the investigation remains ongoing.
