A NEW partnership between the City of Greater Geelong and the Ocean Grove SLSC will see an accessible beach wheelchair made available for public use at Ocean Grove Beach.
The city has provided a MobiChair to the club at no cost, making it free for community members with mobility challenges.
This marks the first time the City has introduced a MobiChair at an ocean beach, with existing chairs located at Eastern Beach public pool and Indented Head Boat Club.
Connewarre Ward councillor Elise Wilkinson welcomed the partnership.
“The partnership and this initiative is a small but meaningful step that enables our beaches to be more accessible and inclusive for all residents and visitors,” Cr Wilkinson said.
“It’s been such a great collaboration, including life jackets donated by the Ocean Grove Disabled Surfers Association, and accessible toilets managed by Barwon Coast Committee of Management Inc.”
The MobiChair allows users to move easily from the car park to the sand and into the water, with large armrests that double as flotation devices.
Life jackets have also been donated by the Ocean Grove Disabled Surfers Association, and accessible toilets are managed by Barwon Coast Committee of Management Inc. The initiative aligns with the city’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2024-28, which focuses on improving accessibility across public spaces.
