November 21, 2019 BY

Anglesea Motor Yacht Club was one of the main beneficiaries of the recent round VicHealth's Active Club Grants.

VICHEALTH’S Active Club Grants are now open to applications, with some Surf Coast sporting clubs recently receiving funding in Round 1 of the 2019-20 program.

Anglesea Motor Yacht Club (AMYC) received more than $9,000, while Anglesea Bowling Club were given $3,000 and Surf Coast Mountain Bike Club more than $2,800.

AMYC secretary Kate Stanley said the grant would be an enormous help and assist the club to be more accessible to people without a background in sailing.

“This funding has enabled us to purchase a Hobie Wave catamaran and lifejackets which will be used to run learn to sail programs at our club in January and more regularly in years to come.”

The grants look to support two key areas: increasing female participation in sport, and increasing social and modified sport.

Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said she believed the grants would help a wider range of people get involved in sport.

“Active Club Grants help to create more fantastic opportunities for people of all ages, genders and abilities to get active and enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

“Being involved in community sport is a great outlet for everyone, where you can make new friends and improve your own health and wellbeing.”

Local clubs to have received the grants in recent years include Barwon Heads 13th Beach Surf Life Saving Club, Drysdale Hawks Football Club, Drysdale Soccer Club, Ocean grove Surf Life Saving Club, Ocean Mind, Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club, Point

Lonsdale Tennis Club, Torquay Hockey Club, Torquay Sailing Club, Torquay Safe Life Saving Club, Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club, Bellarine Bears Baseball Club Barwon Heads Bowling Club and Surf Coast Football Club.

VicHealth says more than $737,000 will be awarded to at least 263 sporting clubs by the time the grants conclude.
