A federal funding boost has delivered a suite of safety and security upgrades at Barwon Heads Airport.

The $105,000 project, which is now complete, involved resealing parts of the runway, sealing nearby run-up bays, reshaping and resurfacing the taxiway, and installing high-security fencing.

The upgrades are designed to improve the airport’s operational safety and security, while allowing more reliable use of the airfield in varying weather conditions.

Member for Corangamite Libby Coker said the upgrades would ensure the airport is safer, more secure and better equipped to operate year-round.

“Barwon Heads Airport plays an important role in our region, from supporting emergency services to driving tourism and training future pilots,” she said.

“It’s a hub for recreation and tourism, offering everything from skydiving and scenic flights to services connecting passengers to King Island.

“This investment ensures the airport can continue serving the Bellarine community well into the future.”

The funding forms part of a $4.5 million package shared among nine regional Victorian airports through the federal government’s Regional Airports Program.

The program has directed almost $100 million to regional airports nationwide, backing 194 separate projects.
