Anzac Day services to honour those who served

THE Surf Coast’s RSL clubs will honour the fallen and veterans of all armed conflicts at Anzac Day services in Torquay, Anglesea and Lorne.

This year Torquay’s march to the dawn service will begin at 6am from the corner of The Esplanade and Price Street and the marchers will arrive at Point Danger for a 6.15am start.

“Marchers need to be in position by 5.45am so we can step off on time,” outgoing Torquay RSL president Ian Gilbank said.

Buses will ferry people from the car park at Spring Creek Reserve to assist those who cannot park closer to Point Danger. They will operate to and from Spring Creek Reserve between 5-8am.
The rides are free.

“This shuttle bus service will make it so much easier for people and families to get to the start of the march and to Point Danger for the service,” Mr Gilbank said.

Soldiers from 427/428 Squadron, Australian Air Force Cadets from Geelong, will provide a catafalque party to stand at the War Memorial at Point Danger during the Service.

Following the dawn service, the community are invited to follow the marchers and join with the veterans at the John and Wilma Pettigrove Gunfire Breakfast at the marquee for breakfast, and the Torquay Bowls Club for the reunion from 8am.

The Anglesea RSL will again have a march followed by a service and wreath laying at its subbranch in Murray Street.

Anglesea RSL’s Anzac Day ceremony will pay homage to our “Women of War”.

These women put their hands up to join the Conflicts of War and went where they were needed.

Along with the continued involvement of the school children from Anglesea and Aireys, the Anglesea service will have the Reverend Dr Kevin Yelverton as guest speaker, Rob Brady performing, local dignitaries and the wonderful Anglesea community.

To join the March, form up at the Noble Street/Great Ocean Road corner at 9.15am for 9.30am step off, followed by a service at 30 Murray Street, followed by refreshments in memorial garden. At the rear of the building.

In Lorne, the Lorne RSL will step off from the Lorne Senior Citizens Centre (corner of Otway Street and Mountjoy Parade) at 11.30am, with refreshments to follow at the Lorne Hotel. For more information, phone June Adams on 5289 2502.
