APPLICATIONS for the 2026 Child Protection Employment Program (CPEP) are now open as the initiative returns for its 10th year.

People studying a social work, welfare, community or a behavioural qualification are eligible to apply for the paid program, which will see them work alongside experienced practitioners.

Diya Thakkar completed the 12-week program in the Barwon region this year, following the completion of her social work degree.

Ms Thakkar said CPEP gave her the best possible start in a child protection career.

“There’s so much support and professional development embedded into the program.

“It allowed me to put my knowledge into practice and kept me moving forward in my learning.”

“I get to work with various communities, multi-disciplinary teams, hospitals, schools – the list goes on.”

The program is a pathway into an entry-level position and since its beginning in 2015, has reduced child protection jobs in Victoria by almost a quarter.

Jobs in child protection can range from case practice support workers through to expert practice leaders.

While on rotations with different teams, Ms Thakkar was exposed to all parts of the program, and could see the responsibilities of workers up close.

“On top of the rotations to different teams, the networking and relationship building, the support you get throughout is incredible,” she said.

“I’m originally from India myself, and there’s such a variety of cultural backgrounds within the CPEP cohort. It was amazing to see.

“I would definitely recommend the CPEP to people – it’s a fantastic opportunity and gets you the best start in your child protection career.”

Applications to the 2026 CPEP are open until August 3.
