Applications open for Young Endeavour crew

The Young Endeavour will soon sail on its next voyage.

YOUNG Australians in the Geelong region looking for an adventure that is out of the ordinary can apply for a voyage in Sail Training Ship (STS) Young Endeavour.

During each 11-day voyage, 24 young participants from across Australia are taught the skills required to sail a square-rigged tall ship – including how to navigate, keep watch, cook in the galley, take the helm and climb the 30 metre mast to work aloft, setting and furling sails.

The Young Endeavour conducts about 20 voyages each year, typically on the east coast of Australia. Now in its 30th year, the internationally recognised program has seen more than 13,300 young Australians aged between 16 and 23 take part.

Corangamite federal member Sarah Henderson said a voyage in Young Endeavour gave participants skills for life and the chance to test themselves in a challenging new environment.

“The program, delivered by Royal Australian Navy personnel, also cultivates awareness of the benefits of diversity and instils a desire to contribute to society.

“With the ship soon to sail north from Sydney to tropical North Queensland, now is a great time for young people from our region to apply for a voyage and gain memories and skills to last a lifetime.

“The program is open to all young Australians. Businesses and community groups from the region can provide scholarships for eligible local participants.”
