Awards keep rolling in for Ocean Grove bakery

Rolling Pin general manager Nathan Williams and apprentice Caitlin Houston get into one of their award winning pies.

THE awards keep rolling in for one of Ocean Grove’s most loved bakeries.
Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes recently won 14 gold medals at The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition 2019, plus two silver medals and two bronze.
Rolling Pin won more gold medals than any other bakery in the country.
Apprentice Caitlin Houston also took out the title of Australia’s Best Plain Pie made by an apprentice, which general manager Nathan Williams said was an amazing result.
Mr Williams said while Caitlin, who is a third-year apprentice, had helped create pies for previous competitions, this was the first time she had made and entered one from scratch.
“I’ve helped out in the last few and done bits and pieces, but I haven’t done every process and step, which is what I did this time, so it was good to get more involved,” Ms Houston said.
“I created a chunky beef, so similar to our jumbo chunky we make in here.
“The competition was for a plain pie, so I couldn’t go crazy with the flavours.”
Mr Williams said Ms Houston had an eye for detail and was good at looking at something to see if it worked or didn’t, as competition pies had to be perfect.
He said he drove all Rolling Pins’ pies up to Sydney overnight in the lead up to the competition, which proved a mission in itself.
“Fourteen gold is an amazing result and we are really excited.
“It’s certainly the highest amount of gold we’ve won in a competition and the highest number of any bakery in the competition.”
He said 16 judges looked at more than 1,500 pies from hundreds of bakeries across Australia during the four-day competition, and that their Jumbo Chunky Beef pie was judged second in the country.
