Barefoot Bowls aims to attract younger veterans

October 18, 2018 BY

THE Ocean Grove Barwon Heads (OGBH) RSL Sub-Branch is holding a Barefoot Bowls Veteran’s Family Day next month to help attract a younger crowd.

The OGBH RSL Sub-Branch recently formed a Younger Veterans (YV) Sub-committee which is investigating opportunities to engage with Younger Veterans (serving and ex-serving) and their families living on the Bellarine.

At the first meeting of the YV Sub-committee it was suggested the OGBH RSL Sub-Branch support a local Younger Veteran through the provision of a Therapy Dog.

The Defence Community Dogs program is a specialised dog training program which rescues abandoned dogs and trains them through Correctional Services to assist Veterans coping with PTSD.

This has since been endorsed by the OGBH RSL Sub-Branch general committee and it is anticipated that a local veteran will be supported in the coming weeks.

The first of what are hoped to be regular activities on the Bellarine for Younger Veterans is a “Barefoot Bowls Veterans Family Day” at the Ocean Grove Bowling Club.

The event is on November 18 from 1.30pm and all Veterans, current and ex-service living on the Bellarine are encouraged to attend.

An afternoon tea will be provided on completion.
