Barwon Coast to celebrate NAIDOC at sunrise
BARWON Coast is inviting the community to walk together for a sunrise celebration this
NAIDOC Week.
The family-friendly event will take place with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation at the Barwon Heads end of Bukareeyoo on July 7
at 7.30am.
This year’s NAIDOC Week theme ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy’ marks 50 years of the celebration.
The theme reflects on the achievements and resilience of people who came before and uplifts the next generation
of leaders.
Barwon Coast Committee of Management chair Sandra Gatehouse said NAIDOC Week is a significant time for reflection, recognition and connection.
“We are proud to walk alongside Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and hold great respect for the deep cultural knowledge and care for Country that has shaped this coastline for thousands of generations, and continues to do so today.
“This year’s theme highlights the importance of supporting young First Nations leaders.
“We welcome the community to join us in celebrating culture, resilience and shared custodianship of this beautiful part of Wadawurrung Country.”
As part of the community walk, the event will include a Welcome to Country, didgeridoo performance and smoking ceremony.
Everyone is welcome to attend the Barwon Coast event and encouraged to take part in the celebration, learn about Wadawurrung culture, celebrate connection to Country and support First Nations voices.
