COMMUNITY members have helped add a native green tinge to part of the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade during a planting day.

Local children and residents were joined by staff from the Major Roads Project Victoria (MRPV) and construction partner BildGroup for the roadside planting at Marshall, where new lanes opened in March.

Fit with a recycling planting trowel, gloves and a bucket hat, participants were provided with 150 tube stock plants and information about the local environment and why certain species were included in the upgrade’s landscaping.

It’s estimated that more than 84,000 native plants will be planted along Barwon Heads Road by the time the project is finished.

MRPV program director Tim Price said it was fantastic to see local children and residents getting their hands dirty in their own backyard.

“Major Road Projects Victoria was pleased to work with a host of residents and local children to add the finishing touches to this section of the upgrade.

“We thank all involved for helping us with this important part of our work.”

Upgrades on Barwon Heads Road will deliver an extra 4km of lanes between Belmont and Charlemont, and also include new shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists, and the replacement of a level crossing with a bridge over Marshall’s rail line.

The upgraded section of Barwon Heads Road will cater for up to 44,000 daily journeys by 2031.
