Bella, Luna top city’s popular pet names
BELLA has emerged as the most popular dog name in the City of Greater Geelong, while Luna has topped the list for cats.
The city has compiled the most liked names and breeds from the more than 30,200 dogs and 10,500 cats registered in the municipality.
Charlie, Luna, Ruby and Daisy round out the top five dog names, and Charlie, Bella, Leo and Coco are the other favourites for cats.

Border collie, labrador, cavoodle, golden retriever and Jack Russell are the five most preferred dog breeds, and domestic shorthair is the most popular cat breed.Lara residents have taken top spot for the highest number of registrations for cats and dogs, followed by Highton, Ocean Grove, Grovedale and Leopold.
Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj, who owns two dogs, said having a constant companion who gave unconditional love was invaluable.
“Our four-legged friends are a beloved part of the family and are scientifically known to increase owners’ physical and mental wellbeing through lower stress levels, increased fitness and more opportunities to socialise,” Mayor Kontelj said.
“Our fenced dog parks at Aldershot Reserve, Belmont Park, Stead Park and Hovells Creek Public Recreation Reserve are a great way to keep dogs happy and healthy.
“You might spot me there playing with my dogs Beau and Benji.”
Deputy mayor Ron Nelson, also a dog owner, said the Geelong region had one of the largest animal populations of any Victorian municipality.

“We’re also supporting the RSPCA Victoria’s Rethink Roaming initiative urging community members to keep their cats safe by containing them to their properties, with the average cat roaming 6,570 hours and up to 300 kilometres per year.”
