THE Bellarine Agricultural Show has recognised some of its longest-serving members at this year’s annual general meeting, and is on the hunt for a new secretary.

Held on Thursday last week, the AGM saw Beryl Downey be presented with an honorary life membership for more than 20 years of service to the show.

Bob de Vries, Annine McDonald, Layla Dickinson and Denise Kent were also presented with certificates for their valued contributions of over 10 years of service to the show.

A new executive committee was also named, with Sue Cairns elected president, Bob de Vries re-elected in the role of treasurer and Allan Bruno elected as vice president.

Ms Cairns said the role of secretary remained vacant and the society was actively recruiting to fill the role.

“The show secretary’s role is more than just a minute taker at meetings; it is more an event manager position for the preparation and running of the show itself.

“The role is reasonably quiet for about eight months of the year but ramps up considerably four months before the show, which is held on the long weekend in March and for a week or two afterwards.

“You will also be required to attend monthly meetings, which are held in Drysdale and Portarlington.”

The position attracts an annual honorarium, and committee support and training will be available.

“If you have an interest in ag shows, have good organisational skills and are computer literate, this could be a great opportunity to get involved in a fantastic community event,” Ms Cairns said.

“If you are new to the area this is not a disadvantage – in fact, it could be a great way for you to immerse yourself in the local culture and get to meet lots of great people.”
