Bellarine Catchment Network calls for Coastcarers
A NEW project supported by the federal government’s Communities Environment Program is set to launch this month.
Environment organisation Bellarine Catchment Network is launching the Coastcare Mentorship Program, with the aim to inspire young environmentalists in the Geelong and Bellarine area.
The program is open to any Grade 4, 5 or 6 pupils in the region who are interested in becoming a local Coastcarer.
Bellarine Catchment Network have delivered many environmental programs to the Bellarine and Geelong region over the past 15 years.
From running tailored environmental days with schools, to facilitating art exhibitions, revegetation days and the production of educational resources, BCN have a rich history delivering environmental support and education to the region.
Corangamite federal member Libby Coker recommended the program for funding, and Bellarine Catchment Network program manager Matt Crawley said he was very grateful for the support that had allowed the project to come to fruition.
“I am very excited to launch this program within our region.
“Students who are accepted will be able to learn about biodiversity, litter management, Ramsar wetlands, Coastcare and community engagement.
“It will be a fantastic opportunity for any young person who is interested in the environment and will provide them with invaluable experience and guidance”.
Ms Coker said the project was a great example of an educational program bringing benefit to the environment and community.
“I was so pleased to be able to recommend this project. Inspiring young environmentalists brings benefits to us all because not only do we engage future generations, but also their parents and communities can learn and grow from their experiences.”
Teachers and parents/or guardians of Grade 4, 5 and 6 students who wish to participate in the program must submit an expression of interest form before 5pm tomorrow (Friday, March 20). Head to environmentbellarine.org.au/education.
