NEIGHBOURHOOD Watch officially launched its first dedicated Bellarine group in November, with a strong focus on working with local police on community crime prevention.

The main goal for the community-based organisation is to make the Bellarine a safer place for residents and visitors.

Neighbourhood Watch started more than 40 years ago, helping to support local community members in protecting homes, schools and businesses.

Bellarine Police Station Acting Senior Sergeant Jarrod Chatfield said officers would be working with the group to benefit the community.

“The group plans to work closely with police on community crime prevention activities and strategies.

“With the formation of Neighbourhood Watch Bellarine, we aim to increase community awareness, promote crime prevention behaviours, and strengthen engagement across digital and physical environments.”

Working with local police, Neighbourhood Watch will host different community forums on local crime and safety issues including scam talks, elder abuse awareness and more.

They will also be involved in community conversations at shopping centres, safety expos and information stands.

Snr Sgt Chatfield said the group worked to support neighbours and the community around them to create a safer, more active community.

“They share information such as crime prevention strategies, run events and activities such as safe plate days, and work in partnership with us and local organisations to prevent crime and help people feel safer.”

As the group continues to gain momentum, it is looking to connect with younger neighbours through schools while increasing the reporting of crime and suspicious behaviour.

Community participation is vital in maintaining the initiative, with all residents and neighbours invited to get involved.

“Anyone can become involved and a member of Neighbourhood Watch, ” Snr Sgt Chatfield said.

“All that’s asked is that you’re committed to working alongside your neighbours and fellow community members to help make the place where they live safer, friendlier and more vibrant and it’s free.

“Neighbourhood Watch welcomes representatives from all towns across the Bellarine to get involved as representatives of their town or estate.”
