Bellarine high school students helping feed vulnerable families

September 12, 2019 BY

Newcomb Secondary College students are cooking up 30 meals a week for Feed Me Bellarine.

LOCAL high schools have jumped on board to help the work of Feed Me Bellarine.
“No questions and no agendas” is the concept behind the community driven food sharing program based in Ocean Grove that is feeding vulnerable families across the Bellarine.
Feed Me Bellarine is the brainchild of Lana Purcell, owner of Belly Bowls and Bellarine Catering, and chef Anthony Woodbury.
Lana said things had been going along swimming since the initiative kicked-off just months ago, and that she was amazed by all the support they had received, as well as the need.
She said Newcomb Secondary College reached out to help by offering to cook meals during their year 10 cooking program and had committed to a five-week program choosing simple meals to make for Feed Me Bellarine.
“We dropped some donated containers to them before their first cook and week one they made spaghetti and bolognaise sauce,” Lana said.
“Week one we picked up 30 individual hot dinners and chef Anthony distributed them to the families who have become regular runs on our FMB map.”
Lana said what happened during week two was a little different.
“The wellbeing team at Bellarine Secondary College reached out to us about teens couch surfing and not always having dinner or a stable home life.
“These are kids trying to finish school… still fighting.
“So we picked up 30 amazing serves of rice and chilli and drove it straight to the other high school on the Bellarine.
“In essence, our kids are cooking for our kids.”
Lana said since then, another high school had made contact about two families in their community that needed help – no questions, no agendas.
She said Anthony and herself had also continued working on restoring and getting a caravan up and running, with the help of some volunteers.
