COMMUNITIES across the Bellarine paused earlier in the week as they marked Remembrance Day on Monday this week.

Services took place across Australia on November 11 to remember servicemen and women who died or suffered in wars and armed conflicts.

Community groups, school students, government representatives and the public gathered at Barwon Heads Hall for a service led by the Ocean Grove Barwon Heads RSL Sub-Branch.

The service began at 10.50am, with guests welcomed by Ocean Grove Barwon Heads RSL sub-branch committee member Tony Wheal, followed by the wreath laying led by secretary Tom Hudson, who also read Ode to the Fallen.

Following the last post, students from Barwon Heads Primary School recited In Flanders Fields and the Response to Flanders Fields.

Reverend John Minotti then led the prayers and blessings before the service conclude with the Australian National Anthem.

Mr Hudson said attendee numbers were slightly higher this year and it was a good turnout.

“I think that’s indicative of the response, particularly the younger people, to remember a bit of history that they didn’t live through.

“We must remember those who fought for our country, when the world was dark by the enemy and we must remember those people who died and served for us and gone before us.

“It’s so important for us to remember, because it’s very easy to forget that we could have been overrun and not enjoy this lifestyle we have today.”

The Ocean Grove Barwon Heads RSL sub-branch also held a service in Ocean Grove at the cenotaph on Monday.

Portarlington and St Leonards RSL Sub-Branch held its service at the St Leonards Hall.
