Bellarine Quilters donate to thread of worthy causes

August 8, 2018 BY

The Bellarine Quilters donated more than 20 beautiful handmade quilts to Bethany Community Support. Pictured is Bethany’s Lyndal with Bellarine Quilters members Chris and Carleen.

THE Bellarine Quilters are proud to contribute to worthy causes and will next month hold a show to raise money for the National Trust.

The Bellarine Quilters – Biennial Quilt Show 2018, to be held at “The Mill’ in Portarlington, will feature a display of member’s quilts, Trading Table, raffle quilt and demonstrations.

The historic Mill imposing a three-storey sandstone structure built in 1857 is owned by the National Trust, where 100 per cent of the entry fee will be donated.

The Bellarine Quilters also recently enjoyed a special “La De Dah” morning tea to raise money for Breast Cancer research in memory of their dear friend Liane Jonus.

Liane was a past president of the Guild who lost her battle with breast cancer 18 months ago.

With tickets sales from a raffle quilt and the door entry fee they raised an amazing $1,252.00. At the morning tea members also made a presentation to Phoebe and Ronnie from the Southern Cross Kids Camp (SCKC) of 20 quilts with matching bags, as well as 38 beanies and mittens.

These quilts will be given to the SCKC as a warm keepsake at their kids’ camp, which was held in Anglesea last month.

SCKC operates in conjunction with organisations working with disadvantaged children, to bring hope and guidance into their young lives.

Organisations that they work with are Barwon Child, Youth and Family; the Mirabel Foundation and other social welfare groups.

SCKC is unique in that it works with children who have experienced abuse in some form, such as domestic violence, sexual abuse, neglect and/or abandonment.

Pheobe gave a heartfelt and emotional talk on what the SCKC organisation was all about – there was not a dry eye in the room.

The Bellarine Quilters have also donated 17 handmade quilts to Bethany Community Support, along with beanies and mittens, to help disadvantaged people stay warm during winter.

In 2016, the Bellarine Quilters exhibition raised $2000 and was split between four local groups, including Portarlington Primary School and Portarlington Food Bank.

The Biennial Quilt Show 2018 will be held at “The Mill’ at Turner Court Portarlington over four weekends on Saturdays and Sundays from October 6 to October 28, and between noon and 4pm.

Entry costs $5 and concessions are available.
