CHILDREN will soon get the chance to learn about the spectacular Bellarine ecosystem when the region’s Nature Cadets program re-launches later this month.

After a short COVID-induced break, Bellarine Bayside’s Nature Cadets is back in full swing providing an effective way to teach young people about the local environment.

Bellarine Bayside has coordinated the program since 2017.

“Studies have shown that nature-based education activities are hugely beneficial,” Bellarine Bayside coastal project officer Jane Shearer said.

“From the health and well-being benefits of simply being outside, this program improves children’s affinity and empathy for the natural environment and in turn helps to protect marine and coastal environments into the future.”

Previous activities included guided bush walks around Portarlington’s Point Richards.

The program offers a variety of activities each season with participants able to join for individual sessions or the whole program.

Activities for the autumn 2022 program include an Indigenous cultural education session with Wadawurrung traditional owners, learning about intertidal invertebrates, exploring the underwater world with the use of aquascopes, a guided bushwalk and a nest box exploration.

“The Bellarine Peninsula is a unique place, with beautiful creatures and plants, rich cultural heritage and an interesting local history,” Ms Shearer added.

“Recently there has been an increase in young families calling the area home and we hope this program will provide a fun and educational way to explore the local environment together.”

Participants are also supervised by their parents.

Autumn sessions are now open for registrations, which will run for six weeks from April 20 to May 25.

The program is aimed to engage with a range of ages but is most suitable for 12 years and younger and all cadets must always be supervised by a parent or guardian.
