Bellarine survivor to support Geelong’s oncology nurses
AN INSPIRATIONAL Bellarine local is hoping to raise awareness of the wonderful work nurses do in the field of Oncology by running a charity gala ball to support their future career aspirations.
Portarlington Business Development Association member Marlene Ebejer aims to finance a post graduate studies scholarship for one Oncology nurse in Geelong as a tribute to them for looking after her during her treatment for T Cell Stage 4 Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2022.
Set to be held on Saturday, April 1 in the Captain’s Room at GMHBA Stadium, the charity gala ball will give ticketholders an insight into the life of an oncology nurse and the various challenges that come with their daily responsibilities.
“The Oncology nurses were so supportive of me during my treatment, particularly over the first few weeks,” she said.
“I did not cope mentally but they sat with me, comforted me and explained things in detail to assist me to cope.
“They work incredibly long hours sometimes doing double shifts and then coming back the next day.
“It was not the doctors who were keeping me alive, it was the nurses and without them I, and many others would not be here.
“I have been inspired and I want to profile them and support them by offering this scholarship.”
Mrs Ebejer said that the funds raised will be vital in making a difference so that more people can get the best possible treatment they can in the Geelong region.
Locals can support the cause by buying tickets to the gala ball, providing raffle or silent auction prizes or via private donation.
Tickets for the ball can be purchased through Eventbrite – Gala Ball – Nurse appreciation – Geelong for $160 each.
