Belles hooked on cycling the Bellarine
A SUPPORTIVE cycling group is giving women a wonderful way to explore the Bellarine while getting fitter and being connected with others and nature.
Vicki Perrett, a keen recreational cyclist, started the Bellarine Belles back in 2016 because she was concerned about the number of female cyclists who seemed to be struggling and not enjoying themselves.
“I knew with some small adjustments and basic skills they too would become hooked on cycling,” she said.
The Bellarine Belles is suitable for beginners and social cyclists and has weekly rides of 10-20kms around the Bellarine.
“We now have over 100 Facebook followers, 40 registered riders and five designated ride leaders who take turns planning our weekly rides, weather permitting,” she said.
“We also organise away rides around the Barwon River or take the ferry across to Melbourne and we have some overnight rides in the planning stage.”
The group, which receives some support from Bellarine Community Health, is also taking part in the Bellarine BUG, which is advocating for infrastructure improvements and for the amazing potential of cycle tourism on the Bellarine.
