Bells Beach showcased in new surf movie
LOCAL surf company Need Essentials has released its newest film, documenting world class free surfer Torren Martyn’s connection with a long-lost surfboard.
Rediscovering an Old Friend was all shot locally at Bells Beach across two major surfing swells in September.
The film centralises around Martyn’s visit to a friend’s house, where he unearthed an original 7’9″ channel bottom twin fin surfboard, tucked beneath a house for several years.
Rediscovering this old friend, the board was soon cleaned up, slipped into a board bag, and headed south to meet a Southern Ocean swell making its way toward the Victorian coast.

True to its original intention, the surfboard came alive quickly in the Victorian swell and again proved to be one of the most enjoyable experiences – allowing early entry, long drawn-out lines, and hyper speed and flow, the kind where you just lay back and enjoy the canvas reeling off in front of you.
Need Essentials media and marketing manager Jack Perry said it was fantastic to see Torren and his old friend come alive.
“Torren just draws the most incredible lines when he’s surfing, and it was fantastic to see him put that on full display through a beautiful run of waves at Bells Beach,” Mr Perry said.

“The way he surfs feels both relatable and inspiring for the everyday surfer.
“Not many can paddle out on one of the World Tour surfers’ high-performance shortboards, but they can grab their mid-length and try to trace similar lines across a wave, just like Torren.
“Rediscovering an Old Friend is exactly that kind of feel-good film – one that gives surfers the spark to dust off an old favourite board and enjoy surfing it in their own way.”
