Belmont Market set for reopening

BELMONT Market will reopen on Sunday, October 11, with the City of Greater Geelong aiming to gradually reopen more stalls in a COVID-safe manner.

Under normal circumstances, the Belmont Market opens at 8am every Monday at the Barwon Valley Activity Centre.

Its stalls sell a variety of goods including clothing, jewellery, accessories, fresh produce, plants, and handmade crafts.

The market reopened for a few weeks in June and July but had to close once more when Stage 3 restrictions were reintroduced.

Sunday will see the market limited to outdoor stallholders, with the city planning to introduce some indoor stalls later in the month.

City of Greater Geelong chief executive officer Martin Cutter said he was pleased to have the market return, albeit in a limited capacity.

“The gradual reopening of the Belmont Market is great news for keen shoppers, stallholders and City employees who have all been impacted by the temporary closures,” said Mr Cutter.

“We’d like to thank the community and stallholders for their patience and understanding as we continue to work through the restrictions for indoor stallholders to ensure we can open safely for the community.

“The Belmont Market is a highlight of the week for our community and is an event that brings passionate and like-minded residents together each Sunday. I look forward to seeing the wide variety of sellers and shoppers return outdoors to this much-loved community market.”

In addition to being exclusively outdoors for its first week back, numbers will be limited so social distancing can be observed.

Mr Cutter encouraged all visitors to play their part.

“When visiting we encourage all market shoppers to follow current restrictions, maintain physical distancing, wear a face mask and practise good hygiene.”
