LOW-COST airline Bonza will touch down in Geelong for the first time this afternoon.

Australia’s newest airline is making its first direct flight from its Sunshine Coast base to Avalon Airport today, which will open up a new route that flies three times a week.

Bonza pressed go on flight sales last month, with prices between Avalon and Sunshine Coast starting at $79 each way.

“Today is a significant milestone as we get wheels up into Victoria for the first time,” Bonza CEO Tim Jordan said.

“South-east Queenslanders can now fly direct to Avalon for a wide range of holiday experiences in Melbourne, Geelong, the Surf Coast and the Great Ocean Road.

“Likewise, Victorians can now fly direct from Avalon to the Sunshine Coast to visit loved ones and take a well-earned break.”

Avalon Airport CEO Tony Brun said a new flight route between Geelong and the popular Queensland travel destination would deliver benefits for the local area.

“We are thrilled to partner with Bonza and host the very first flights into Victoria,” he said.

“The route between Sunshine Coast and [Avalon] is very popular and is fantastic for Victoria.

“This launch today provides more choice, competition and opportunities for travellers to enjoy more of this great country. We are proud to make flying easier and accessible for keen travellers.”

Bonza is also set to go on sale from its Melbourne base later this week, which would mean a total of 27 new routes in Australia’s eastern states, mainly servicing regional airports.
