The Boorai Centre in Ocean Grove will remain closed for the rest of this week and reopen on July 20, following confirmation that a child who attended the facility was later confirmed as contracting coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Department of Health and Human Service (DHHS) advised the City of Greater Geelong council on July 9 that a child who attended the centre on July 2 had contracted COVID-19, and the council closed the centre to all staff, parents and children on July 10.

The council has undertaken an extensive, deep clean of the whole facility, in line with the DHHS COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

All identified close contacts of the confirmed COVID-19 case have undergone a coronavirus test. To date, no test has returned a positive result.

Following further direction yesterday from the DHHS, the council says it is exercising some caution and not re-opening the centre until next Monday.

“This decision has been taken as the safety of our families, and the safety of the wider Geelong community, is our highest priority,” City of Greater Geelong chief executive officer Martin Cutter said.

“We are working closely with the DHHS and providing the level of information and support it requires.”
