Borough get to work on beach safety

BEACHGOERS will benefit from safer access to the sand this summer after the Borough of Queenscliffe commenced remediation works at Springs Beach.

Persistent tidal surges have caused sand to wash away at the foot of the access stairs south of the skate park, often creating a significant drop to the beach.

Borough chief executive officer Martin Gill said the installation of an extension to the concrete stairwell will allow people of all ages, to reach the shore comfortably at any time.

“In preparation for the popular holiday season, everyone young and old deserves the opportunity to experience our famous beaches,” Mr Gill said.

“So, we’re thrilled to be able to make that process a little bit easier.

“We encourage all residents and visitors to make the most of what Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale has to offer this summer.”

The borough has taken measures to stabilise the coastline by using an excavator to reposition rocks that had moved out of place, preventing the rock wall from collapsing during extreme weather.

New rocks have also been added further along the beach, with any existing gaps plugged to secure the wall for seasons to come.

Resurfacing works on sections of the promenade’s bitumen will coincide with the beach upgrades.
