Bring warmth to your interiors with solid timber cabinetry

December 26, 2018 BY

Over the last couple of years, more and more clients are wanting to create inbuilt furniture and joinery from solid timber for their homes, according to Bombora Custom Furniture co-owner Alison Collins.

TIMBER is a material like no other whose warmth creates a sense of luxury, comfort and home.

Each stick is unique, with the grain patterns, sap lines and markings telling tales of feast, famine and insect attack.

Wood has an innate touchability that draws at people, almost unconsciously to run their hand over the piece to feel the texture; the aliveness creates a sense of balance in any space when juxtaposed against other harder materials such as glass, concrete, ceramics and paint.

With the cultural shift towards conscious consumption and reducing waste, fashion trends in interiors are moving away from the mass-produced plastic items back to the hand-crafted pieces created from natural materials.

We now are looking to find items to fill our homes that have a timeless sense of style and the quality to last a lifetime, returning to the mindset of our ancestors where household items where treasured and passed down through the generations.

My parents for example were gifted a secondhand lounge suite for their wedding from a relative, the quality of the workmanship and materials of these pieces still see them with pride of place in my parents’ home 40 years later!

Over the last couple of years, more and more clients are wanting to create inbuilt furniture and joinery from solid timber in their homes.

This is including such things as timber vanities, tv units, bookcases, floating shelving, bench tops, mud rooms and kitchens.

There are several reasons why these clients have gone down this path.

Firstly, on an aesthetic level, timber brings warmth to a space and is a simple way to create a sense of flow throughout the interior of home, it adds beauty to a room like no other material and simply cannot be faked.

Another reason is for longevity: laminate, veneer and melamine most commonly used to create cabinetry in today’s homes become damaged over time causing the appearance to diminish with the only course of action being to replace the item.

Timber on the other hand is a fixable product whose appearance gets better over time, if damage occurs it is repairable by either a reapplication of oil for a minor scratch or a sand back renovation for more serious injury.

This ensures that what may be a higher investment initially becomes a very thrifty choice in the long run; the final common thread is to reduce environmental impact.

Milling wood or recycled material into usable sticks of timber requires very little resources such as electricity and water.

With a solid timber piece of furniture or cabinetry, the timelessness of style, quality of materials and care taken to customise the design ensures that the piece can be enjoyed indefinitely and even become that treasured heirloom piece.
