Build delay for skate rink

September 5, 2022 BY

ST LEONARDS skate park will be out of action for at least another year after procurement problems delayed an upgrade project.

The City of Greater Geelong is delivering a new multi-purpose facility at the lakeside site, which would include basketball-netball courts alongside a new skate park, smaller recreation activities and landscaping.

The city removed an existing skate park to make way for the upgrade in December last year, with construction due to start mid-this year.

But slow progress on construction contracts means the skate park build has been pushed back to next year, while major works on the sports courts are due to start in February.

COGG had initially planned to deliver both projects together, but received no tender offers for the redevelopment.

Specialist contractor Grand Slam surfaces has since received the sport court contract, with the city undergoing a revised tender process for the skatepark.

COGG said it expects to start skate park works mid-next year, with the entire project to be completed by the end of 2023.

Mayor Peter Murrihy said he looked forward to the sports facility coming to fruition.

“The St Leonards community stands to benefit significantly from the exciting redevelopment of the St Leonards Skatepark in McLeod Street,” Mr Murrihy said.

“The facility has been a popular recreational space in the past and will continue to serve the community by providing a source of entertainment and activity in the future.

“The St Leonards Skatepark redevelopment will help to build a stronger sense of community by providing a valuable facility for the youth.”
