DECEMBER 30 put a full stop on arguably the most difficult VCE year as students received their ATAR results.

Saint Ignatius College Geelong, in Drysdale, was one of many schools in the region to put the COVID-19 affected 2020 behind them, but it ended on a high note with some impressive ATAR results.

Matthew McInerney achieved Dux of the school after he received an ATAR of 99.6.

Other high-achieving students included Sophie Milsome, Emma Zanghi, Jorja Connellan, Amelia Maheras, Sara Braden, Matilda Crosgrove, Skye Secombe, Katherine Cooke, Milly Stannard and Thomas Smith.

Principal Michael Exton said he was extremely proud of the group’s efforts and thanked all of those who had supported the students throughout a testing year.

“I write to congratulate our Year 12 students on their achievements after what has been a challenging year. Well done to all Year 12 students,” Mr Exton said on a statement on the school’s Facebook page.

“Their perseverance, knowledge, skills and effort resulted in an achievement that met or exceeded their expectations.

“Thank you to all teachers, support staff and families for your support of our Year 12 students throughout this uncertain and difficult year. Well done on your extraordinary commitment, perseverance and patience.”

More than 64,800 students across Victoria received their VCE and VCAL results. This year, 50,284 students graduated with their VCE, an increased completion rate of 98.3 per cent, while there was a record number of students to receive their VCAL in 2020, 14,529.

Acting Minister for Education Gayle Tierney congratulated all students in what was an unprecedented and difficult year. She reminded students that their results do not define them and there are many opportunities and pathways available.

“Congratulations to every VCE and VCAL student. This has been an incredibly challenging year, but every student of the class of 2020 has shown outstanding resilience and commitment,” Ms Tierney said. “To all teachers, parents and carers, thank you for supporting and guiding our VCE and VCAL students through this year.”

VCE students have until 12pm on January 4 to change their preferences prior to the release of round one offers from the Victorian tertiary institutions on January 14.
