The Surfside Waves Soccer Club celebrated its 25th anniversary during the round one match over the weekend.

THE Surfside Waves Soccer Club has celebrated its 25th birthday by hosting a community party.

More than 300 people attended the event on Saturday where they enjoyed a guest performance from local musician Kim Cooper, jumping castles, and kicking competitions.

The event took place during the first home game for the season at the Shell Road Pavillion ground in Ocean Grove.

President Mike Sutton said the celebration attracted a mixture of past, present and future players and coaches who embraced the community celebration.

“It was a really good day and a brilliant atmosphere,” he said.

“We had a whole spectrum of people attending from past volunteers, supporters, players and coaches it was really great.”

Mr Sutton said a number of players had grown up at the club, starting in the junior competition and now playing at the highest level.

“We had a lot of people commenting on what a great community feel the club has which was a real compliment,” he said.

During the event the State League Soccer season kicked off with the Surfside Waves Reserve team coming from behind to draw with Lara United at home.

The senior’s side was defeated by the opposition, but the positivity remained high during the event which led into the night.

“We had lots of kids activities such as face painting and lucky dip, as well as the barbeque, kiosk and bar going all afternoon,” Mr Sutton said.

“There were kids everywhere enjoying themselves, families, grandparents, players, coaches and of course our magnificent volunteers making it all possible.”
