RICK and Krysia Bonusiak first met in Adelaide in 1971 and tomorrow (April 20) will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

The couple met on a bus while on a trip performing with the Polish Folklore Ensemble, travelling around the country.

“We thought there was an immediate attraction, but we were just friends enjoying each other’s company and touring around some of the beautiful cities and performing concerts,” Krysia said.

When they arrived home, the pair didn’t think that they would see each other again, until Rick lost his suit on his way home and asked Krysia to help him find it.

After they tracked down the suit, they continued to see each other around Adelaide before meeting properly again in early 1972 where Rick asked Krysia out.

In March 1973 Rick proposed, they then married a year later at Mount Carmel’s Church in Pennington.

“That’s what you did back in those days, none of this waiting until you’re 40 to get married,” Rick said.

The couple were 18 and 19 when they met and have enjoyed all the special moments together.

“I think we’re just an old-fashioned couple who believe in enjoying and doing things together, and that’s something we both believe is very important,” Krysia said.

“I think because we do things together and we keep enjoying every dream and adventure together.”

Over the 50 years Rick and Krysia raised two children and have welcomed two grandchildren into their lives, something they say has been a highlight during their time together.

“We’re very fortunate that with our two children and our daughter and son-in-law, we are all very close.

“We’ve had holidays together and even around Australia with the two grandchildren and we really enjoy spending time together, so we’re very very lucky and we appreciate those times.”

Over the past 50 years the pair have also been on a number of trips.

“Throughout our married life, we’ve been to Europe, Canada, USA, Asia, so we’ve had quite a few beautiful holidays.,” Krysia said.

When asked if they had any advice for others Rick said, “do what your wife says and give her all the money”.

Kysia added that in all seriousness she believes you have to be good friends.

“You’ve got to enjoy each other’s company and I think it’s not easy, but I think you’ve got to understand that not everybody is the same as you.

“Just like a friendship with girlfriends or mates or anything, you’ve got to be respectful and understanding.”
