Celebrating our nurses

Two nurses at Star of the Sea share why they love being a nurse.

Did you know that it was recently International Nurses Day?

Nurses hold a special place in the hearts of many, especially now, and we thank them for the many positive contributions our registered and enrolled nurses across make our aged care residences.
Two of our wonderful nurses from Star of the Sea Aged Care Residence in Torquay have shared their thoughts about why they love being a nurse, especially in the aged care sector.
Angielyn has been working at Star of the Sea for two years, and says that being a nurse makes her happy, as well as extremely proud that she is able to make a difference in someone’s life.
“Registered nurses are important as we advocate for our residents,” she says. “We take care of our residents by monitoring their health status, ensuring they take their medications as per their doctor’s orders and co-ordinate with the other members of the healthcare team. Also, and importantly, we provide emotional support through all the stages of our resident’s life.”
Layana has been working as a registered nurse at Star of the Sea since it opened in 2017, and says she had to mention that it is a beautiful home, with a great location, amenities and care staff.
“I truly feel that being a nurse makes oneself better. A nurse should be caring, polite, understanding, patient, knowledgeable and empathetic.
“The 2020 pandemic has made it crystal clear that nurses are so important, we are fighters and life savers. We spend our time and energy to bring about good outcomes, by understanding the needs and problems of the resident.
“I try to be a better nurse, and individual, every day, and use the opportunity I have to give a helping hand to others. It really is an awesome feeling to experience the happiness of the residents and smile on their face when we are caring for them.”
