THE Give Where You Live Foundation raised more than $30,000 for those facing homelessness and food insecurity through its annual Christmas Appeal.

The local not for profit called on the community throughout December to help people struggling to make ends meet.

More than 100 local businesses and individuals enabled food, material aid and support for prescriptions to be provided to vulnerable locals through the Community Choice voucher program.

Foundation chief executive officer Bill Mithen said he was humbled by the response from local businesses and individuals during the campaign.

“We are so grateful for the support we received throughout the appeal,” he said.

“All funds raised for the Christmas Appeal will stay in the Geelong community to support families and individuals who need help to put food on the table, those who are experiencing homelessness and those facing barriers to employment.

“We can’t do it without our supporters who enable us to meet the needs of those in our community who need it most.

“Together we can continue to help make the Geelong region a place where everyone thrives.”

The Foundation’s Community Choice voucher program and funding to Uniting programs allowed Gemma and her family to access fresh produce and beds to sleep in over the festive period.

“More mouths to feed meant there wasn’t a real lot left in the budget,” she said.

“I didn’t want the kids to arrive and not have anywhere to sleep. They’d gone through enough already.

“I am so grateful for the help. Thank you for making them comfortable.”
