Citizen scientists monitor Point Lonsdale sand movement

March 27, 2019 BY

A group of dedicated volunteer citizen scientists, including Marvyn Brown, have been collecting data as part of the Point Lonsdale Sand Monitoring Program.

THE Point Lonsdale front beach is a highly valued section of foreshore where people walk, swim, surf, snorkel and relax on the pristine sand.

Amid rising concerns over the future of this section of beach, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning support the Bellarine Catchment Network to develop and manage a program aimed at better understanding these concerns.

This new citizen science program called the ‘Point Lonsdale Sand Monitoring Program’ was established to identify potential trends in sand movement over time.

For the past five months, a group of dedicated volunteer citizen scientists have been collecting a range of data including weather and water conditions and mapping beach profiles.

Bellarine Catchment Network are always looking for volunteers to contribute to data collection at this site and at a site at the Narrows beach.

If you would like to become a volunteer or to learn more about the program, please email Naomi Wells at [email protected] or search the project on the BioCollect website.
