Closure option to tackle speeders
A PARTIAL closure of a busy Curlewis road will be considered to address speeding drivers and other ongoing traffic concerns.
Community members have raised concerns about the volume and speed of traffic, noise, road width and interim design of Tivoli Drive since it opened to through traffic in August last year.
The City of Greater has already introduced speed humps, splitter islands, more signs and parking restrictions at a cost of almost $100,000 over the past 12 months to address issues and slow traffic on Tivoli Drive.
The speed limit has been reduced from 60 to 50 kilometres an hour between Portarlington Road to Stanley Avenue, and electronic speed trailers were also placed on the road in May.
However, the council has now resolved to investigate extra traffic calming measures including a partial closure as a temporary solution until the road is duplicated.
An independent traffic assessment and report into the north-south road, which helps connect Portarlington Road to the Bayview Central shopping area, was presented to the council last week.
The independent analyst has recommended a “holistic management approach” involving input from the council, motorists, Regional Roads Victoria and Victoria Police.
Bellarine Ward councillor Jim Mason said as these traffic calming concepts were developed, the community would be asked to provide input into the potential options as the new traffic measure plans were developed.
“We’re keen to get further public feedback on how to best manage traffic in the area, and the most suitable additional immediate temporary measures,” Cr Mason said.
“I’m pleased a specialist acoustic assessment will be completed shortly following community feedback on vehicle noise.
“We want to ensure our initiatives are well directed and provide the best outcomes, ahead of the duplication of the road.”
The second stage of the Jetty Road Urban Growth Plan estimates a duplicated Tivoli Drive and Greenvale Drive would be completed in 2025-2026.
Due to the timing of the duplication, council has resolved to investigate the feasibility of a partial road closure and further community engagement is planned following the investigation.
