THE Ocean Grove Cobras will officially launch their 2019 season this weekend with a fun family gala day.

The event will allow the local community the opportunity to get to know the town’s junior football club while having some fun at the same time.

Highlights will include skills and fitness sessions, jumping castles, games, merchandise sales and the opportunity to register for the season ahead.

The Cobras’ Gala Day on Sunday March 3 will celebrate all things junior footy.

Ocean Grove Cobras president Shaun Stow said this year the club would field 16 teams in the local competition and welcome more than 200 Auskickers to their home ground each Friday night.

“It’s safe to say that junior football is absolutely booming in this town!” Mr Stow said.

“We look forward to growing these numbers even further post Gala Day 2019.”

More than 200 children and their families attended last year’s first ever Cobras Gala Day, and as a result of its success it’s back this year with exciting new additions.

Mr Stow said with the prominence of junior sport in this growing region and some ambitious plans around new clubrooms for their club, the OGCJFC had invited local politicians to the event and they had kindly taken up the invitation.

Confirmed attendees include, Corangamite federal member Sarah Henderson, Labor’s Corangamite candidate Libby Coker, and state Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville.

Bellarine ward councillors Trent Sullivan and Stephanie Asher will also be in attendance.

Adding to the attendee list, much to the players’ delight, is a surprise Geelong Cats player and several players from the Ocean Grove Senior Football Club, including current coach and ex- Cobra, Jordy Jones.

Mr Stow said the gala day wasn’t a political function but an event to celebrate the kids, the club and the community they lived in.

“We have invited key political figures to see what our club is all about and for them to see the restraints we currently have with size of clubrooms and no girls’ facilities, etc,” he said.

The OGCJFC Season 2019 kicks off on April 26. The Ocean Grove Cobras Junior Football Club Gala Day is at Collendina Oval, Minerva Close, Ocean Grove on Sunday March 3 between 1pm and 3pm.
