LABOR candidate for Corangamite Libby Coker is calling on the community to be mindful around the water while enjoying themselves over summer.

Ms Coker, whose family resides on the Surf Coast, said locals and visitors alike needed to take extra care in light of recent tragedies on Surf Coast beaches.

“We are incredibly lucky in this region to be living so close to the world’s most iconic coastline, but it’s important that all people stay safe while going for a surf or a swim.”

Opposition leader Bill Shorten announced Labor would invest $40.9 million to establish a national water safety program prior to the last federal election, addressing a gap in the national curriculum.

“Right now, there are children right across our country missing out on critical swimming and water safety instruction. Labor’s Water Safe program would help ensure Australian kids know how to stay safe around the water,” Ms Coker said.

Surf Life Saving Australia’s Beachsafe website includes local beach conditions and information, including patrol services and hazards.

The website also contains a wealth of surf safety resources.
