REMEMBRANCE Day services took place across the country this week, including on the Bellarine, where the community gathered to observe the lives of Australians killed in war.

Local RSL Sub-branches invited communities to attend services as they honoured those who did not return from battle.

The Portarlington and St Leonards RSL held two commemorative services on Tuesday (November 11), starting in St Leonards followed by a service at the Portarlington Cenotaph.

Services were also held in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and Drysdale.

Remembrance Day was originally known as Armistice Day and was later renamed to honour those who fought across all wars.

Each year, at 11am on November 11, the country observes a minute’s silence to signify the end of World War I in 1918.
