Community spirit brings hope and a home on wheels
BELLARINE’S community has rallied behind a Drysdale resident who became homeless last year, raising more than $8,500 to purchase a van for her to sleep in.
For the past year, Bern – who did not want to be further identified – has been living out of a small sedan with her cat Sheba, while she waits to be approved for public housing.
Unable to lie down, she has battled back pain and a lack of sleep.
More than 100 community members, many of whom are doing it tough themselves, contributed to the fundraiser with 80 per cent of the funds raised in just 24 hours.
The donations have been put towards the purchase and registration of a second-hand van, providing Bern with a more comfortable and secure place to sleep.
Clifton Springs resident Brianna Allin, who organised the fundraiser, said she had started bringing Bern meals six months ago but wanted to be able to provide more support.
“I offered a spare room in my house, but she was really unsure because she didn’t know me.”
Ms Allin said the situation was further complicated by the eligibility requirements of public housing.
“If she took my offer, she’d move down on the waitlist, and it would take her longer to find housing.
“She’s wanting to be independent eventually and have a house, but because she’s on that list, she’s not really able to.”
Ms Allin suggested a van as an interim solution and Bern, eager to save up for the vehicle herself, agreed only to help to find one at an affordable price.
That’s when Ms Allin launched a GoFundMe campaign, appealing to the community for donations.
“Because everyone’s so nice down here I thought ‘Let’s see if we can raise some money’,” she said.
“She was very shocked but very appreciative.”
Ms Allin said she did not expect the fundraiser to receive as many donations as it did.
“I couldn’t stop crying because I was so happy for her.
“It’s really surprising to see how generous people are, especially in the hard times. Everyone’s doing it tough… and everyone really dug deep.
“There are kind people around everywhere and you just know it’s such a tight-knit community.
“Even after the fact of raising money, I’ve had so many people asking what else she needs.
“There are so many people doing different things and the best they can. If they’ve not donated, they’ve helped in other ways.”
