Cooney-Cross to feature as clinic’s special guest

JUNIOR footballers will get the opportunity of a lifetime to see and hear from a Matildas midfielder and former Surf Coast footballer when Kyra Cooney-Cross comes to town next Wednesday.

Cooney-Cross, who was recently announced as part of the Australian women’s football team headed for the Paris Olympics, will feature as the guest of honour at next week’s Coerver Coaching Geelong clinic at Banyul Warri Fields from 4.30pm-7.30pm.

Coerver Coaching Geelong director and former Melbourne Victory player Adrian Leijer said it was an exciting chance for young footballers across the region to see one of the best footballers in the country up close.

“It’s very exciting for our local kids to be able to mingle with a global star who is only weeks away from heading off to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“Kyra is a star for the Matildas and has really made her mark with Arsenal in her debut season, it’s such a fantastic opportunity and I’m sure it will be very inspiring.”

Cooney-Cross will participate in a Q&A with the participants upon arrival, where they will have an opportunity to take a photo with her and get an autograph as well.

She will then head out and observe the junior footballers who will participate in a Coerver skills clinic and will provide tips of her own to improve their skills.

“Kyra was a Coerver kid as a junior and her dad operates Coerver Coaching Central Coast,” Leijer said.

“For all of our holiday camps we invite a current professional down, with the aim of giving the kids a taste of what life is like as a professional. Our main focus is to instil positive messages into the kids and have a positive influence on their lives.

“A few weeks ago we had Arsenal Women’s assistant coach down at our Performance Academy.”

Leijer said next Wednesday’s clinic had sold out as expected, but spots remain open for participants to join in during the holiday camps in Torquay and Geelong.
