QUEENSCLIFF children’s charity Cottage by the Sea will provide more joy to children who need it through the launch of a secondary facility.

The Riptide Cottage will be officially opened by vice-chancellor and president of Deakin University professor Iain Martin on February 21.

Drawing inspiration from the surrounding seascape, the state-of-the-art building will be used as a respite facility for families in need of a break by the sea.

Timber-look cladding and green brick glazing on the façade accentuate a nature-inspired aesthetic, while sustainability and fun are key features of the facility.

The internal features reflect Cottage’s mission – providing experiences that embrace fun and create opportunities for growth in environments that inspire.

It features 28 child beds and room for staff, a suspended hammock and library for relaxation, climbing wall and indoor slide for adventure, plus a commercial kitchen.

Cottage by the Sea chief executive officer Adam Wake said the new facility is the best of its kind anywhere in the country.

“This will have an immediate impact on every child walking through its doors – whether it’s program participants or a family on a respite holiday.

“This remarkable building is thanks to many funders who have contributed to the full funding, especially Boutique Homes (ABN Group). They are also building a second charity home to auction, with proceeds going to the new building.”‘

Cottage purchased the Riptide building in 2006 and from 2020-23, Riptide was used as a respite facility for families in need of a seaside holiday.

The rebuild of the facility began in November 2024 and was overseen by Plan Group Geelong, SPL Architects and renowned prestige builder David McDonald.

Mr McDonald said it was a joy to work on the project.”It’s so important,” he said.

“Riptide will bring so much joy to children who need and deserve it, creating a lasting impact. It’s been very rewarding.”
