Council’s plan to create a Smart City

THE City of Greater Geelong council has released the first version of its framework to drive a future for Geelong that embraces the opportunities of clever technologies.

At its December 1 meeting, the council endorsed the release of the draft Smart City Strategic Framework, which builds on the City’s Digital Geelong Strategy adopted in 2015, and aims to address significant societal, environmental and technological changes across the region.

According to the framework, the Smart City is defined as “connecting technology, data and innovation to create a more liveable, sustainable and thriving Greater Geelong”.

Several Smart City initiatives are already in place or in development across the municipality, including free public wi-fi, augmented reality (AR) bollards, smart lighting, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) trials and the Geelong Data Exchange.

The draft framework outlines seven core principles and five strategic pillars that will help shape a four-year action plan outlining key projects and actions for the city.

The five strategic pillars comprise a city that:

• Nurtures inclusive, connected communities
• Celebrates creativity, design and innovation
• Creates intelligent places and spaces
• Harnesses the value of data, and
• Prioritises digital infrastructure and communications.

These have been informed by several community-led aspirations:

• A prosperous economy that supports jobs and education opportunities
• A leader in developing and adopting technology
• Creativity drives culture
• A fast, reliable and connected transport network
• A destination that attracts local and international visitors
• People feel safe wherever they are
• An inclusive, diverse, healthy and socially connected community
• Sustainable development that supports population growth and protects the natural environment, and
• Development and implementation of sustainable solutions.

City of Greater Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said it was important to embrace technology and innovation in the community.

“This year we’ve seen first hand the important roles technology, data and innovation play in keeping our community connected and informed,” she said.

“The draft Smart City Strategic Framework is an important document to help Greater Geelong become a more liveable, sustainable and thriving region.

“I encourage community members to review the draft framework and submit their feedback.”

One priority outlined in the draft framework is the use of smart sensors to monitor the environment and understand how the climate is adapting. This technology will allow the city to use resources in a more responsible and sustainable manner.

Other proposed opportunities include technology to support better traffic movement with real-time route planning for vehicles and smart traffic signalling, “push to talk” emergency systems in public spaces, and further investment in smart city infrastructure for the community such as broadband to help improve digital inclusion across the region.
