LOCAL artists are sharing a touch of their artistic expression at several Bellarine Community Health (BCH) sites across the region through a community partnership.

Several hand-crafted totems are on display at BCH sites in Point Lonsdale, Drysdale and Portarlington, produced during a series of creative workshops with support from local professional artist, Kaz McGlynn, and psychologist Dr Glen Kelly.

The community art connection project aimed to improve social connectedness and wellbeing by engaging people with an illness or a disability through creative workshops, with participants spending the past two years creating the detailed ceramic sculptures by hand.

“We are thrilled the totems are complete and have been installed at our three sites,” BCH CEO Garry Ellis said.

“The totems are very colourful and creative and it’s terrific to see such a great outcome through engaging people with chronic health conditions with an arts project.”

Each totem was created under local award-winning artist Kaz McGlynn’s guidance and mentorship, who runs art’sKool in Ocean Grove.

“As someone with lived experience of a disability, I feel great pride and privilege to have mentored this group of talented artists at art’sKool at Kazworks,” Ms McGlynn said.

“Their sculptures showcase the unique experiences and perspectives of individuals who often face barriers in society.

“They also offer a glimpse into what’s possible when we embrace our differences and celebrate our unique abilities.”

Ms McGlynn added, “publicly showcasing the totems challenges stereotypes and promotes inclusivity of people living with disabilities”.

“Acceptance and diversity highlights that everyone can and is encouraged to contribute in our communities.”

Ms McGlynn said since the project began many participants have continued improving their artistic skills, some of which have gone on to sell their artworks.
