DREARY conditions didn’t deter the community from heading along to the St George’s Flower show on Saturday.

Returning for its second year in the Old School Hall, the event drew an attendance of more than 1,500 people over the course of the day.

Flower show organiser Di Rule said the day was a great success and they were pleased with how things went.

“Adding the spinning wheel was marvellous and it added to the atmosphere of the family fete and it was really fun, people really
got into it.

“All stallholders seemed to be quite happy, although they would have liked there to have been no rain.”

Following the wet conditions, the dog show was moved inside the church.

Attendees enjoyed potted plants, stalls and Devonshire tea while those who entered their flowers and vegetables were in the running for a range of prizes across different categories.

“We had a great display of vegetables this year, beets and carrots and kale, a cabbage, beautiful red cabbage, orchids, we had one trestle table full of the orchids, it was gorgeous,” Ms Rule said.

For the first time the flower show was also complimented by a dog show, sponsored by Kerleys.

Although the dog show had to be moved inside because of the wet conditions, it didn’t stop the fun.

Dogs of all breeds and ages competed in a range of categories including best owner look-a-like, best fetcher, best talker and more.

Three dogs were awarded prizes in the Prettiest Girl category.

Dog show organsier Donnie Grigau said everybody had a good time at the event.

“It wasn’t a serious competition, it’s all about getting people together to have a bit of fun.

“There’s a lot of people down there with dogs and we all love our dogs, we had a puppy and then the oldest dog we had was 16, that was Harry, and he won the best owner look alike.”

All money raised from the day will be donated to St George’s restoration appeal.

Ms Rule said a big part of what the show aimed to achieve was about raising awareness of the church and the Old School Hall.
