TWO of Barwon Heads Fire Brigade’s (BHFB) longest serving volunteers have been recognised for their service at the brigade’s annual dinner and awards night on Saturday.

BHFB Captain John Crozier was honoured to receive his 50 Year CFA Life Member Medal and National Medal 3rd Clasp at the Barwon Heads Golf Club, alongside Eddie Wilson who received his National Medal 2nd Clasp.

“I have met many people over the years, many of whom have become close friends,” Mr Crozier said.

“The camaraderie and support is second to none, making the good times better and the tough times all the more manageable.”

CFA Board Deputy Chairperson, Michelle McLean was in attendance to present the prestigious awards and congratulated all members of the Brigade for their commitment and diligent service to the community.

In addition to fellow brigade members being in attendance, other guests included community supporters from the All Saints Anglican Church Op Shop, the Barwon Heads Cricket Club, the Barwon Heads Fine Music Society, the Barwon Heads Hall Committee, and members of the Ocean Grove Barwon Heads RSL Sub Branch.

Mr Crozier said even though members generally shun the limelight in preference for letting their actions speak, it was important to acknowledge the role of the BHFB in serving the community of Barwon Heads, the Bellarine Peninsula and beyond.

“Congratulations to all those recognised, I am very proud to be part of an organisation that does such valued work in the community,” Mr Crozier said.

“So far we have turned out to 44 incidents this year, and that requires team effort and ongoing commitment to being available and training throughout the year.

“In addition, we could not be as effective without the support of many local businesses and community organisations who regularly donate so that we may purchase vital equipment.”

For Mr Wilson, he joined the BHFB in 1984 and by 1988 had become the brigade Secretary.

Eddie was an operational firefighter until 2014, turning out to a wide range of local incidents, including significant fires at the Barwon Heads Golf Club, the Bancoura Surf Club and the Barwon Heads Pub.

“I can’t speak more highly of what the BHFB means to me, I felt lost after I left the Navy and the CFA gave me purpose again,” Mr Wilson said.

“This is a strong, hardworking Brigade, and being a volunteer firefighter is a great way to serve the community.”

Other award winners included Jye Quinney and Eliza Carlon who received their 5 Year Certificate.

Brandon Newton was awarded the Sean Wilson Encouragement Award, Firefighter of the Year went to Rob Pogue, Gavin Baddock received the Captain’s Award and Geoff Wilson was voted by his peers to receive the Barwon Heads/Ocean Grove RSL Award.
