Demons start 150th year at annual golf day
PORTARLINGTON Football Netball Club’s 150th year is officially in full swing following the club’s annual golf day.
Demons president Steve Cogger said the full field of 132 golfers provided the liveliest golf day atmosphere to date in his three years as president, as the club prepares to embark on its century-and-a-half milestone.
“This was the biggest golf day I’ve been a part of for sure and it’s shaping up to be the biggest season at least since I have joined as president,” Mr Cogger said.
“We’re going to be a stronger club in 2024, we’ve recruited well across football and netball, and we like where we’re at – we’ve already made substantial progress this year.”
Proceedings were headlined by local master of ceremonies and SEN junior commentator Max Becker, maintaining the excitement levels for the 140 in attendance at the luncheon.
Rodney Grinter, a Melbourne Demon from 1985 to 1995, also provided guests with stories from his time in the league as the golf club facilitated lunch and beverages.
“Portarlington Golf Club are always great sponsors of our club, we have an extensive community relationship, and we like to think we help them a little bit as well,” Mr Cogger said.
“To have all of our sponsors out on the course for our golf day is always a nice time, it allows us an opportunity to celebrate the great community we all love and live in, and it also gives us a chance to provide an update on where we are as a club.
“Particularly going into our 150th year, we can’t wait for the start of the season, and a major shoutout to vice president Darren Hellman as well, who works tirelessly to make sure events like this run smoothly.”
Portarlington FNC’s official season launch will take place at the Portarlington Golf Club on Friday, March 15 from 5.30pm.
