Perfect conditions expected for Wreck2Reef this weekend

PERFECT swimming conditions are expected to greet competitors taking part in the 10th annual Wreck2Reef open water swim this Sunday.

With a temperature of 24 degrees, a partially cloudy sky, and light southerly winds, flat water should see swimmers record good times in all events, according to organiser John Walter from Indented Head Yacht Club.

The day kicks off at 9.30am with the second running of the longer 2.5k event, which proved very popular last year.

This will be followed by the 1.2k open, 500m novice, and 300m junior events, so there are events for all ages and skills.

To celebrate the tenth running of the event, the Yacht Club is providing free entertainment for children including a giant water slide.

This, combined with various food and drink vans, means you don’t have to be a competitor to come and enjoy the day, and help the Indented Head Yacht Club raise much-needed funds to continue to develop its children’s learn to sail programs, the only organised sporting activity for youth in Indented Head.

For the second year, organisers of the event are also teaming up with the Care for the Bay program, and will also offer kids activities, show bags and other giveaways on the day.

“This reflects the way that sailing is an activity that is very responsible in its use of our precious waterways and helps teach kids how to care for them and use them responsibly,” Mr Walter said.

The Caring For Our Bays team will be providing a range of activities for the community, highlighting the diversity of marine and coastal environments.

A highlight will be showcasing the Burrunan Dolphin, an endemic dolphin species of Port Phillip Bay.

A Caring For Our Bays team member will be swimming the 1.2km swim as the Burrunan Dolphin and in doing so, will be raising the profile and understanding of marine life.

Registration is available on the day at the swim site at the Indented Head Community Hall, but pre-registration is available online and is compulsory for all 2.5k event competitors.
